CONSERVATION ORGANIZATIONS IN NEW BRUNSWICK URGE CITIZENS AND CANDIDATES TO VOTE FOR NATURE

Four prominent nature organizations in New Brunswick—the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society - New Brunswick Chapter, Conservation Council of New Brunswick, Nature NB, and Nature Trust of New Brunswick—sent a survey to party leaders to learn more about their plans to champion conservation efforts if elected.


GRANDE-DIGUE EXTENSION PUTS NATURE TRUST OF NEW BRUNSWICK OVER 13,000 ACRES-PROTECTED MILESTONE

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick is proud to announce it has reached a new land protection milestone, now conserving more than 13,000 acres (5260.9 hectares) of pristine wilderness across the province with the recent expansion of the Réserve naturelle Grande-Digue Nature Preserve.

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick was proud to gather along the shoreline at the Keiko & Errol Nature Preserve at Ross Island on Saturday, July 6 to celebrate the official grand opening of this sanctuary forever protecting 373 hectares (921.5 acres) of ecologically significant wetlands, coastal forest and rugged coastline.

Dr. C. Mary Young, one of the builders of the land conservation movement in New Brunswick, has been named the 2023 recipient of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Land Conservation.


NATURE TRUST CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF GRANDE-DIGUE NATURE PRESERVE

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick was proud to hold the official grand opening of the Grande-Digue Nature Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 21. This landmark event celebrated the permanent protection of key habitat in the region, featuring extensive mixedwood forests and home to distinctive species such as the eastern wood-pewee and northern goshawk.

2022 LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN LAND CONSERVATION RECIPIENT ANNOUNCED

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick is thrilled to announce the 2022 Lieutenant-Governor's Award for Excellence in Land Conservation recipient: Mr. Wayne Burley. This award is presented annually by The Honourable Brenda Murphy, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, to recognize significant contributions to protecting the province's natural heritage through stewardship, volunteerism, donation of lands, or building effective partnerships.

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick welcomes the Province’s updated Climate Action Plan and its particular emphasis on nature-based solutions. The Plan outlines five new nature-based initiatives with timelines over the next five years, including protecting and restoring more forests and wetlands as critical ecosystems in the fight to ensure that New Brunswickers and nature remain resilient in the face of climate changes and impacts.

NATURE TRUST NEEDS HELP PROTECTING MATURE FOREST AND WETLAND IN WAASIS

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick has the exciting opportunity to protect 38.2 hectares (89.4 acres) of important mature forest and Provincially Significant Wetland habitat in Waasis, New Brunswick, as part of the Conserve Y(our) NB: Protect the Places You Love campaign. As of July 13th, the Nature Trust has raised $125,0000 to protect this remarkable property. To secure this important wildlife refuge, the Nature Trust is seeking public support to raise the remaining $45,000 by September 21st, 2022. 


2020 & 2021 LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR’S AWARD FOR EXCLLENCE IN LAND CONSERVATION WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Announcing the 2020 & 2021 Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Land Conservation recipients Ms. Jessie Davies, retired Director of the Environment and Sustainable Development Research Centre at the University of New Brunswick, and Sentinelles Petitcodiac Riverkeeper (SPR), a not-for-profit organization devoted to the restoration of the ecological health of the Petitcodiac and Memramcook watersheds.


THE NATURE TRUST OF NEW BRUNSWICK CALLS ATTENTION TO MARINE DEBRIS THROUGH THE 6TH ANNUAL GREAT FUNDY COASTAL CLEANUP

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick has wrapped up its sixth year of combating marine debris in the Bay of Fundy and beyond, after completing the 6th Annual Great Fundy Coastal Cleanup.


UPDATE ON THE FERRIS STREET FOREST AND WETLAND NATURE PRESERVE

In May of 2021 and the following months, hundreds of New Brunswickers came together to call on the provincial government for more robust wetland protection because of the tragic wetland draining at the Ferris Street Forest and Wetland Nature Preserve in Fredericton. Thanks to the quick actions of those who witnessed the draining, and supporters who signed petitions, shared posts on social media, called their MLAs, wrote letters, called into radio shows, and brought attention to this critical matter, the provincial government halted the work and pumped water back into the wetland from nearby Regiment Creek.

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick was disheartened to learn on Friday morning that the wetland on the northern section of the Ferris Street Forest and Wetland Nature Preserve was drained by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DTI) as a result of highway maintenance in the area, causing critical damage to Species at Risk habitat and migratory bird nesting sites.

The Nature Trust of New Brunswick has protected 75 hectares (185 acres) of sensitive mixed forest and Skutik (St. Croix) River shoreline habitat near St. Stephen. To celebrate the protection of the Beausoleil Nature Preserve, the Nature Trust has collaborated with the Alcool NB Liquor (ANBL) Community Foundation to announce a one-year partnership to publish the Passport to Nature.

The late Owen Washburn, and his wife Sheila Washburn, long-time New Brunswick naturalists and environmentalists, have been honoured with the distinction of being the 2018 recipients of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Award for Excellence in Land Conservation.
