Overview

The Louis W. Bassett Nature Preserve consists of 98.14 hectares (242.5 acres) of mixed forest and watershed habitat in Pokiok Settlement, York County. It contains a near-mature wet eastern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis) forest, mature eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) stands, vernal pools, and small streams/seepages throughout.

The nature preserve is home to important Species at Risk in New Brunswick that the Nature Trust is honoured to protect.

History

This nature preserve was generously donated by the Bassett Family in 2019, recognizing its important ecological significance. Mr. Richard (Dick) Bassett’s father, Louis Bassett, had operated a well-respected Christmas tree farm on the property for over 45 years.

The Louis W. Bassett Nature Preserve is located within traditional Wabanaki territory.

Ecology

This preserve contains near-mature wet eastern white-cedar (Thuja occidentalis) forest area, which are known to host uncommon species in New Brunswick. The property consists of diverse forested habitats like tamarack (Larix laricina) and eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) stands.

There are also numerous vernal pools within the preserve, which are seasonal pools of water that provide essential breeding habitat for a variety of amphibians.

The Louis W. Bassett Nature Preserve is home to a number of different plants and wildlife including bird species like winter wren (Troglodytes hiemalis), hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus), and pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus).
