TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF WABANAKI PEOPLES/BEAUSOLEIL, N.B. — The Nature Trust of New Brunswick was proud to hold the official grand opening of the Grande-Digue Nature Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 21. This landmark event celebrated the permanent protection of key habitat in the region, featuring extensive mixedwood forests and home to distinctive species such as the eastern wood-pewee and northern goshawk.
The Grande-Digue Nature Preserve encompasses a network of trails ideal for various recreational activities, including walking, hiking, and cross-country skiing in winter. This preserve marks significant growth in the Trust’s conservation efforts within a new region, enhancing its Francophone outreach and reinforcing collaborations with local stewardship groups.
“The inauguration of the Grande-Digue Nature Preserve symbolizes not just conservation success, but also our growth in engaging new communities and strengthening partnerships with local leaders vital for the sustainable management of these precious ecosystems,” said Stephanie Merrill, CEO of the Nature Trust.
Key local recreation organizations, Sentier Pluriel and Ski Beaver, have been instrumental as stewards of the Grande-Digue Nature Preserve. Jean-Claude Gagnon, President of Sentier Pluriel, reflected on the collaborative spirit underpinning this success.
“The creation of the Grande-Digue Nature Preserve and the development of new walking and ski trails are an excellent example of collaboration between community organizations and a provincial nature conservation organization supported by the municipal authorities," said Gagnon. “All together, we can improve the quality of life of the community while contributing to the biodiversity and the preservation of species.”
Robert LeBlanc, President of Ski Beaver, echoed these sentiments. “I can confidently say on behalf of our membership, we are extremely pleased to have this spectacular block of wilderness protected, forever,” LeBlanc said. “I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the owners of this land for considering the Nature Trust as part of their legacy, and to the Nature Trust for enabling us to protect and promote outdoor activity on this land for future generations.”
The Nature Trust extends its deepest gratitude to its supporters in the Grand Digue/Beausoleil community and across the province whose generosity made the establishment of this preserve possible.
The Trust warmly invites the public to experience firsthand the beauty and tranquility of the Grande-Digue Nature Preserve.
