FIELD TECHNICIAN

Start Date: April 28th or May 5th, 2025 (flexible)

Length: 18 weeks

Wage: $16-$18 (depending on experience and funding)

Reports to: Conservation or Stewardship department (or both if split position)


ROLE SUMMARY

The Field Technician works closely with the Stewardship and Conservation Coordinators to support the acquisition and stewardship of nature preserves. This role contributes to various projects, including Species at Risk conservation, ecological restoration, habitat enhancement, and other projects. They are engaged in field work, research, data management, and outreach to landholders and stewards.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and conduct field surveys and site assessments on potential conservation lands and existing nature preserves;

  • Perform monitoring visits and habitat assessments of nature preserves;

  • Compile, analyze, and manage field survey data and landholder records;

  • Prepare detailed technical reports, such as baseline documentation, land acquisition assessments, and monitoring;

  • Engage with private landholders and support the Conservation Partners Program by recruiting and mobilizing participants;

  • Support conservation and stewardship projects, including ecological restoration, habitat enhancement, and integrating technology for monitoring and management;

  • Assist the Engagement team with volunteer training and community outreach events;

  • Prepare field-based and science-related content for Communications;

  • Conduct literature reviews and research for ecological and land management projects;

  • Prepare site maps and manage spatial data using GIS software;

  • Collaborate with project partners, stakeholders, and communities to advance land conservation initiatives;

  • Represent the Nature Trust professionally at events and meetings.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled or graduated from a post-secondary program in Forestry, Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Conservation, or related field. Equivalent work experience will also be considered;

  • Strong fieldwork skills and experience with environmental data collection and ecological land classification;

  • Proficiency in identifying flora and fauna in New Brunswick, with knowledge of Species at Risk;

  • Experience using various software including MS Word and MS Excel;

  • Ability and willingness to work long hours, in all weather conditions, including overnight travel and weekends when necessary;

  • Physically fit, adaptable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision;

  • Experience using tools such as ArcGIS and Remote Sensing an asset;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience with public considered an asset;

  • Strong work ethic with proven abilities in organization, time management, and adaptability;

  • Additional assets include experience in a Non-Profit organization, a valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle for work purposes, Wilderness First Aid Training, and bilingualism.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is office-based with outdoor fieldwork required from April-October. The Field Technician must be willing to travel for field work, and may be required to work flexible hours, including overnight trips to remote areas of the province. Field work will require the Field Technician to be physically fit and willing to work in unfavorable conditions at times.
